Short answerResponsible gambling means keeping gambling a limited, affordable activity by deciding your time and money limits in advance and using tools that enforce them. In Australia, BetStop is the national self-exclusion register for licensed online and phone wagering providers. It does not cover offshore online casinos, so people who use those sites usually need several tools together. These include the casino's own limits and self-exclusion, a gambling block from their bank and blocking software. Free, confidential support is available 24/7 through Gambling Help Online.

What responsible gambling means in Australia

Responsible gambling is a set of habits and protections for adults who gamble. It covers deciding in advance how much money and time you will spend and treating any losses as the cost of entertainment. It also means never gambling to recover losses, pay bills or cope with stress.

In Australia, the protections available to you depend on who you gamble with. Licensed Australian wagering providers, such as sports betting and racing operators, must follow national consumer protection rules and connect to BetStop. Online casino games and online pokies cannot legally be offered to people in Australia. This means offshore casino sites sit outside those Australian protections. The legal background is explained in our guide on whether online gambling is legal in Australia.

In practice, responsible gambling works best as layers. Your own limits come first. Operator tools are the next layer, followed by blocks at your bank and on your devices. Outside support is available whenever these layers are not enough.

How BetStop works and what it covers

BetStop is the National Self-Exclusion Register. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) runs it. You register once, and for the period you choose, you are excluded from all licensed Australian online and phone wagering providers. These providers must close or block your accounts and must not accept bets from you. They must also stop sending you marketing.

Registration is free. You can do it yourself, and someone can help you with the process. You choose the exclusion period. It cannot be cancelled early, which is deliberate because it protects you during moments of temptation.

BetStop does not cover land-based venues such as clubs, pubs and casinos. These have separate state and territory venue exclusion schemes. BetStop also does not cover offshore websites that are not licensed in Australia, including most sites offering online casino games and pokies to Australians.

  1. Go to the official BetStop website at betstop.gov.au. Do not use links in emails or ads.
  2. Verify your identity using the details the register asks for.
  3. Choose your exclusion period and confirm it. You can choose a support person if you wish.
  4. Expect licensed wagering providers to close your accounts and stop marketing to you.
  5. For land-based venues and any offshore sites you have used, add the separate exclusion and blocking tools described below.

Can you self-exclude from online casinos in Australia?

Yes, you can self-exclude from online casinos, but not through a single national switch. BetStop only binds licensed Australian wagering providers. An offshore online casino is not required to check the register, so registering with BetStop will not by itself lock you out of those sites.

To exclude yourself from an offshore casino, you generally have three options:

Casino self-exclusion: Most casino sites have an account-closure or self-exclusion option in the account settings or responsible gambling page. Others handle it through customer support. Ask for a permanent closure in writing and keep a copy of the confirmation. How well this is enforced varies from site to site, and you have limited recourse if a site breaches it.

Device-level blocking software: This blocks access to gambling websites across your phone and computer. It helps against offshore sites and newly launched sites that do not appear on any register.

Payment blocks: These stop money leaving your account for gambling, which is covered in a later section.

Being able to open an account on a casino site does not mean that site is authorised to operate in Australia. Our guide on how to tell whether an online casino is legit explains how to check this.

How to set deposit limits at an online casino

A deposit limit caps how much money you can add to a gambling account over a set period, usually a day, a week or a month. It is one of the most effective tools because it acts before you are in the middle of a session.

Licensed Australian wagering providers must offer deposit limits under the national consumer protection framework. Offshore casinos decide for themselves whether to offer limits and how they work. Read the site's responsible gambling page before you deposit.

At many sites, a lowered limit takes effect straight away. A request to raise a limit is often delayed by a cooling-off period. Check the site's own terms to see whether this applies.

Hypothetical example: You set a weekly limit of A$100. You deposit A$60 on Monday. The site will then accept no more than A$40 until the weekly period resets. Any request to raise the limit to A$300 would only apply after the site's cooling-off period, if it has one.

A deposit limit does not limit losses from money already in the account. It also does not stop you opening accounts at other sites. You can combine it with session time reminders, loss limits where offered, and the bank-level controls below.

  1. Before your first deposit, decide a monthly amount you can afford to lose. Divide it into a weekly limit.
  2. Open account settings and find the responsible gambling, limits or account controls section.
  3. Set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits. Choose the lowest figure you are comfortable with.
  4. Save the confirmation. If no limit tool exists, treat that as a warning sign about the site.
  5. Turn on session reminders or time limits where the site offers them.

Setting limits through your bank

Many Australian banks let you block gambling transactions on your debit card, usually with a switch in the banking app. The block works by recognising merchants that are categorised as gambling businesses and declining those card payments. Check your own bank's app or website to see whether it offers a block and how long it takes to remove one. Some banks add a waiting period before a removal takes effect, which gives you time to reconsider.

Bank blocks are strong but not complete. They may not catch payments where the merchant is not coded as gambling. They may also miss money sent to a crypto exchange and then on to a casino, or transfers made by PayID or bank transfer to an intermediary. If you are trying to stop gambling at offshore sites, use a bank block together with blocking software and site-level self-exclusion.

You can no longer use credit cards for online wagering with licensed Australian providers. A card does not need to be involved for harm to occur, though. Our guide to the payment methods casinos accept explains how different payment types work and how much protection each offers.

Warning signs of gambling harm

Gambling harm can build gradually, and it affects family and friends as well as the person gambling. Common warning signs include:

Spending more money or time than you planned, or regularly raising your limits.

Chasing losses, or gambling to win back money you need for rent, bills or debts.

Borrowing money, using savings meant for something else, or hiding transactions.

Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not gambling, or gambling to escape those feelings.

Lying to people close to you about gambling, or arguments about money.

Seeing big wins or bonuses as a way to fix financial problems.

If any of these sound familiar, that is a good reason to talk to someone now rather than waiting until things get worse. Support services also help people worried about someone else's gambling.

Where Australians can get free help

Gambling Help Online is Australia's national online support service. It offers free, confidential counselling by online chat and email, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The website lists the current national gambling helpline number and links to face-to-face services in each state and territory. It also has self-help tools and support for family members and friends.

You do not need to have stopped gambling, or to be in crisis, to contact them. Many people get in touch to set up a plan, understand their options, or get help with registering for BetStop or blocking payments. If you are worried about money, financial counsellors can also help you deal with gambling-related debts.

If you feel unsafe or are having thoughts of self-harm, call 000 in an emergency.

Questions and answers

Does BetStop block offshore online casinos?

No. BetStop covers licensed Australian online and phone wagering providers. Offshore casino sites are not connected to it, so use site self-exclusion, a bank gambling block and blocking software as well.

Can I cancel a BetStop exclusion early?

BetStop exclusions are designed so you cannot cancel them before the period you chose ends. Choose a period that gives you meaningful breathing space.

Will a deposit limit stop me losing more than the limit?

It stops new deposits beyond the cap during the period. It does not limit losses from money already in the account or deposits made at other sites.

Is Gambling Help Online free?

Yes. Counselling by chat and email is free and confidential, and it is available 24/7. Family members and friends can also use it.

Can my bank stop me gambling?

Many Australian banks offer a gambling block for card payments. It is effective for payments coded as gambling but may not catch crypto purchases or some transfers, so combine it with other tools.

Play safely

Gambling should stay entertainment. Set a deposit limit before you start, take breaks and never chase losses.
